Recruiter Teams up with Mencap to Tackle Low Employment of People with a Learning Disability

On Tuesday 20 June, over 10 recruitment consultants from PageGroup will be holding a skills-sharing workshop aimed at improving opportunities for people with a learning disability to get in to paid work.

Less than 6% of people with a learning disability are in paid employment1, despite many more wanting to, and being able to work. When looking for a job, people with a learning disability face a number of barriers, all which contribute to the woeful employment figures. Barriers include:

  • Confusing application forms
  • Stressful interview process
  • Negative employer attitudes
  • Lack of in-work support

As part of PageGroup and Mencap’s new partnership, recruitment consultants will work with a number of people with a learning disability to provide guidance on CV writing and interview techniques to help with their journey in to employment. This activity expands on PageGroup’s existing community programme, Page Talent, which sees consultants working with schools to provide career skills such as preparing CVs, interview tips and advice.

The event, which is being held during Learning Disability Week (19-25 June), marks the launch of a charity partnership between PageGroup and Mencap which will focus on improving the number of people with a learning disability in paid employment.

Spokespeople from PageGroup and Mencap, as well as people with a learning disability, will be available for interview at the event.
