Leeds Building Society Exceeds Volunteering Goals Two Years Ahead of Target

Leeds Building Society has surpassed the targets it set for volunteering two years ahead of schedule.

In 2017, the Society committed to providing 8,000 hours of colleague volunteering hours in the community by 2020.

Since the launch of the target, colleagues have already spent more than 10,500 hours helping the communities where they live and work.

In June, the Society’s volunteering programme, which offers every employee seven hours’ paid leave each year to spend in their communities, was extended by a further seven hours to enable colleagues to also support Leeds Building Society’s national partnerships – Samaritans and parkrun.

Throughout 2018, 845 people at Leeds Building Society’s offices and branches volunteered to take part in more than 200 separate activities across the UK. This included volunteering with Canal and River Trust, Skelton Grange Environment Centre, St George’s Crypt, Hyde Park Source, parkrun, Samaritans, Larchfield Care Home and the Woodhouse Community Garden.

Richard Fearon, Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Leeds Building Society, who volunteered at a local parkrun event, said:

“Doing what’s right for our communities is a key part of our Corporate Responsibility strategy. We’re founded on the principle of people helping people, and volunteering is one of the greatest expressions of this.

“We’ve increased our commitment in recent years, entering two national partnerships with parkrun and Samaritans, and it’s great to have surpassed our target ahead of schedule.

“To help at more than 200 separate activities across the UK in 2018 is a fantastic achievement and wouldn’t have happened without the dedication of our colleagues. Colleagues are already sharing their volunteering plans for 2019 and I’m looking forward to the impact our volunteers can have across the UK.”
