Major New Royal Navy Recruitment Drive Targets Gamers

A new campaign to recruit 250 submariners to the Royal Navy has been launched at the UK’s biggest video games event.

Shared Services Connected Limited (SSCL), which is leading the recruitment drive on behalf of the Royal Navy, was at the ExCeL London for EGX. The flagship event in the UK’s gaming calendar, which takes place between 17-20 October, attracts thousands of delegates from all over the UK.

Workforce experts from SSCL were at the convention showcasing Virtual Reality (VR) technology that provides a real world experience of life in the Royal Navy. Serving submariners were also on hand to describe their experiences of life at sea and the opportunities a career in the Royal Navy can offer.

The decision to kick off the recruitment campaign at EGX reflects the fact that many gamers have the unique skills required for a life aboard a submarine.

Spending many weeks at a time submerged beneath the waves, Royal Navy submariners spend long periods of intense focus – deploying the very latest technologies – on everything from surveillance and intelligence gathering, to conducting covert operations with special forces.

David Parsons, Director of Resourcing Services at SSCL, explained:

“By using VR and the real life experiences of serving personnel to provide a glimpse into the world of a submariner and a Royal Navy career, we hope to appeal to many of those who are active in the gaming community.

“The intense concentration and attention to detail that is needed for life on a Royal Navy submarine are skills that gamers already have. In many cases they have the ability to cut through the noise, seeing and hearing things that many others would easily miss. A Royal Navy career may just be a perfect match.”

“The submarine service is a unique, challenging, yet hugely rewarding place to work. Submariners are part of an elite team within UK Defence, working with highly-sophisticated technology and taking on some of the most demanding tasks in the Royal Navy.

“The mental demands of round-the-clock watching and listening – whilst remaining undetected – can be intense and requires resilience and skill. Many of those with a natural affinity for video games already possess the core skills needed for a successful and rewarding career as a Royal Navy Submariner.”

The new Royal Navy recruitment drive, which aims to sign up an extra 250 submariners by the end of 2020, is the latest high-profile public sector resourcing campaign to be managed by SSCL, a unique joint venture between digital experts Sopra Steria and the Cabinet Office, providing critical business services to government agencies and police forces.
