Following the recent news that Japanese firm Hitachi will suspend works on its multi-billion-pound UK nuclear project due to rising costs, recruiter, Samuel Knight International has called for a refocus in nuclear investment.
Matthew Haswell, Director of energy at Samuel Knight International commented:
“This latest announcement is a real concern for the nuclear field. If the project falls by the wayside, this leaves Hinckley Point power station as the only new UK reactor still being built. Given the urgent need for additional nuclear capacity in the UK, projects such as this are vital in meeting our energy demands.
“When we also consider that nuclear has long been facing talent challenges, the fact that thousands of contractors now face a shortage of work poses a real threat to the future availability and development of critical energy talent. While everyone has been preoccupied dealing with Brexit, I’m hoping that once this has been sorted, attention can be refocused on securing a financial strategy for this vital UK infrastructure project.”
