Personality Versus Talent: Which Deserves More Consideration?

Hiring managers have to balance a lot of factors when narrowing down candidacies. And when that’s your main job, you can quickly spot red flags and decide who gets through to the next round.

But if you’re a small business owner, each new hire can feel like a nail-biting trial-and-error process. How important is experience, asking rate or talent? What can you do to make the hiring process as smooth as possible?

It may come as a surprise to learn that personality is just as important as talent and experience.

You Can Nurture Talent

Think about it this way: you can nurture talent, negotiate rates and help someone build experience, but you can’t overhaul someone’s personality. You can’t make them a nice person to work with, not even if you drag them into your office for a stern chat every week.

Finding someone who meshes with the culture of your company, gets along with immediate co-workers and is polite, responsible and open to feedback is the ultimate goal. You don’t want to hire someone and have them become a daily headache for you and the rest of your team. Not even if they do technically fulfill the goals of the job.
